Mike Taub reports the passing of popular Pat McCann,the former Southern Area Light-heavyweight champ from Harrow,who died in the early hours of Sunday 8th November.He was 63 and for the past several months had been confined to a care home in Northwood.
The highlights of Pat's career were his two thrilling points wins over the future British champion Johnny Frankham,the first over ten rounds at Wembley and the second over twelve at the Royal Albert Hall.Both were Area title fights.The second victory over Frankham in February '74 brought his career record to an impressive nineteen wins in twenty fights,his only loss having been a twelve round points defeat to future British middleweight champ Kevin Finnegan.
Pat,a southpaw,was on the wrong end of a debatable home-town points decision when facing Harald Skog in Norway and Lothar Stengel and Karl-Heinz Klein in Germany but ended his career on a winning note in May 1981 with an eight rounds points victory over Crawley's Shaun Chalcroft,giving him a commendable overall record of 29-6-0.
The funeral service is at 10am on Thursday 26th November at St.Joesph's RC Church,191,High Road,Harrow Weald,HA3 5EE.
The coffin will be transported in a horse drawn carriage accompanied by a Scottish piper.
He will be buried next to his Mum and Dad at the Harrow Weald Cemetery,Clamp Hill,Stanmore,HA7 3JS
