LEBA WELCOMES JOHN H. STRACEY – 40 YEARS ON
By MIKE TAUB
FOUR decades have slipped by since British and European champ John H. Stracey
caused a massive upset in Mexico City by relieving Jose Napoles of his WBC world
welterweight crown, climbing off the floor in the first to stop the legendary Cuban
in the sixth round.
No one in boxing will ever forget Stracey’s magnificent giant-slaying
achievement, least of all the members of LEBA. And on Sunday, 6 December,
they will get the opportunity to pay homage to the man himself.
Yes, folks, the pride of Bethnal Green – now domiciled in the Wirral, Cheshire -
will be commemorating the 40th anniversary of his famous victory by travelling
down to join us at the William Blake for our Christmas party.
Now a renowned cabaret singer with a wide repertoire of songs, he’s sure to be
in great voice for us on the day.
I’ve no doubt members will be in equally good voice to give the popular John H.
an extra-special, rip-roaring LEBA welcome.
