SAD to relate the passing on the morning of Wednesday, 6th April, of long-time
LEBA member John Lloyd at the care home in Cricklewood that had been his
home for the past several years. He was 87.
John was a valued sub-editor and sports writer for the Daily Express for most of
his working life and frequently contributed to Seconds Out. He was nicknamed
Welsh Fargo by LEBA president Stephen Powell in deference to his nationality and
the fact he would invariably deliver his copy at the very last minute to Stephen’s
mother, the late LEBA secretary Mary Powell.
In addition to his writing, he was quite the entrepreneur and at one time became
the agent and manager of well-known singer Dorothy Squires, who was once
married to Sir Roger Moore.
In later years John began to suffer from diabetes, which badly affected his feet
and eventually prevented him from attending meetings. More recently he
developed advanced Alzheimer’s disease, which impacted greatly on his ability
to eat and drink.
John was a good-hearted and generous man – always open and honest and
wonderful company. News of his death will be greeted with deep sadness by

Funeral service: 12 o’clock midday on Wednesday, 27th April, at Llywdcoed
Crematorium, nr Aberdare, Mid-Glamorgan, CF44 0DJ, followed by refreshments
and buffet at Bessemer’s Hotel, Merthyr Tydfil. Family flowers only. Donations to
the Alzheimer’s Society.
John’s second cousin Gareth Lloyd states that LEBA members will be more than
welcome to attend.
