SIR HENRY COOPER GOLF CLASSIC

Posted by Paul Fairweather on 5th Aug 2010
This years Golf Day was a terrific success, despite the economic recession,we had 36 teams competing with former boxers playing in most teams and Speedy Hire continued to sponser the even as they have done for the past eight years.
In addition thanks to Charlie Wright,George Abrahams sponsored the "longest drive" in the name of his father in law,George Merritt a great LEBA member.Sir Henry has not played golf for 4 months due to health reasons, but turned up on the day and went round the course in a buggy to meet all the teams before returning to the half way Bar where he "held court" talking to many old friends,Danny McCarthy,Terry Murphy,Dick McTaggert,Alan Rudkin,Vic Andretti and Frankie Taylor amonst others. We wish Sir Henry a speedy recovery and he hopes to be fit for next years Tournament.
Boxing champions,John Conteh,Dave "Boy" Green,Billy Schwer,Eddie Avoth,Graham Earl,Johnny Pritchett,Bobby Arthur,Peter Cragg,Allan Gray,Steve Crosby and many more played in this years classic.
Jackie Turpin of the famous "Turpin Clan" played and won the best boxer's score and was also reunited with LEBA member Brian Hudspeth, his former opponent in the 1967 ABA final which was voted the best of the night.Brian won on a 3rd round stoppage and the two had never met since, but spent time with each other during the evening talking over old times as did so many of the boxers during the day.Mickey Abrams played in the winning team and will hold the trophy until next year.
Hatton TV filmed the event and interviewed Sir Henry,John Conteh,Larry O'Connell,Ray Caulfield and Dave "Boy" Green which is being shown on www.hattonboxingtv.com in the news section. The entertainerJimmy Tamley was outstanding with his Ventriloquist act and had most of the crowd crying with laughter,he was followed by LEBA member Dean Ferris our very own soloist. The money raised on the day has not yet been finalised but will be on par with last year at just over £10,000,which means we will still be able to subsidise the Awards Luncheon for our members.Everyone played their part in making the day a success,The T off Teams,Rosemary and Barbara for collecting a record amount in the raffle of £1650.00,Blakes Golf Club and staff and the organising committee of Paul Fairweather,Johnny Pritchett and Ray Caulfield.

SEE YOU ALL NEXT YEAR.
