London's rich boxing legacy revealed at Hackney exhibition

Posted by Paul Fairweather on 23rd Mar 2011
On Thursday 18th March, the team at LOCOG** preparing the London 2012 boxing competition, visited the Hackney Museum to see the "East End Lives"exhibition. They met with both the museum management and LEBA to explore the possibilities of how the exhibits could be used at Olympic games time.To quote "Hackney museum and LEBA together have brought a fantastic exhibit that really captures the spirit and tradition of amateur boxing.More specifically,it demonstrates the strength of the amateur boxing scene, past and present,in the East End of London".
With West Ham Boxing Club posting an amazing 6 champions at the recent 2011 National Schoolboys Championships,it is evident that this tradition is being handed down from generation to generation.
The visit was a great success and was a great reminder of just how rich boxing history of the capital is.
Thanks go to Matt,LOCOG Boxing Manager for the above text.

Sorry to have missed the exhibition.

Would love to find links to my Great Grandfather's brother Sammy King and his family. Sammy has some form on Box Rec. (This was after fighting at Gallipoli in WWI.)

I have searched everything I can think of and can't find any record of my husband Joseph Charles Rood? Is there any record of his boxing history? We held a charity night for The London Ex Boxers at the Alma Public House in Hackney, This was several years ago, but it would be good to be able to find a record or his fights. Can anyone help me please?

Travelled up from Bournemouth to see the Exhibition. Excellent. Thank you so much to those who gave their time in putting this together. Really hope my next visit will be to the proposed Hall of Fame.

Hope one of my favourites will be included in this one, The Gifted One, Kirkland Laing.

Anyone know of the whereabouts now of another Hackney Boxer featured, Jason Matthews ?

Many Thanks again

God Bless to all

R I P George Merritt

Kind Regards

Tim Farmer
